In any on or off-highway environment where pedestrian and vehicular traffic mix, the deployment of sturdy pedestrian guardrails is essential to safeguard pedestrians. These settings, including high streets, walkways, car parks, and industrial sites demand solutions that can withstand environmental challenges and provide lasting protection.

Armco Direct has a range of guardrails designed to meet these demands, combining resilience with functionality.

This guide will explore the critical considerations for selecting and installing the most effective guardrail systems, ensuring they meet the safety requirements of off-highway locations.

Understanding Pedestrian Guardrails

Pedestrian guardrails play a crucial role in a range of on and off-highway settings, where they provide essential safety measures.

They delineate safe pathways for foot traffic, shielding pedestrians from active work areas and machinery such as forklift trucks. Pedestrian guardrails can be instrumental in managing crowd movements, preventing accidents by separating pedestrians from vehicular access and guiding them through designated routes. They also have many applications including in car parks and loading bays.

The strategic placement of these barriers ensures that safety protocols are maintained, minimising the risk of injury in environments that are potentially chaotic and hazardous.

Components and Standard Details

Pedestrian guardrails, classified primarily as PG1 and PG2, are crucial for ensuring pedestrian safety by guiding movements and protecting against vehicular traffic. The key components of these guardrails include the frame incorporating an extended leg for root fixing and the infill bars.

PG1 guardrails typically feature an infill panel made from 12mm diameter steel bars, spaced 108mm apart to prevent pedestrian access to hazardous areas (a 16mm and 20mm infill is also available). These panels are securely mounted between integral posts, which are spaced at standard intervals of 2.0 metres.

PG2 guardrails are manufactured with the same frame and infill bars. These infill bars however have a horizontal sight gap at the top, which provides enhanced protection in areas with higher pedestrian traffic or increased risk.

Both types of guardrails are constructed using galvanised steel to BS 7818 Class 2, ensuring durability and resistance to environmental factors, they can also be polyester powder coated to increase visibility.

The specification of materials and measurements in PG1 and PG2 guardrails is vital in maintaining their efficacy and longevity in industrial and commercial applications.

Installation and Maintenance

Installing pedestrian guardrails must adhere to precise standards to ensure maximum effectiveness and safety. The process involves setting posts at 2.0 metre intervals, embedding them securely into concrete foundations.

Maintenance of these guardrails is equally critical, it includes regular inspections for corrosion and structural integrity. Damaged sections should be promptly replaced to maintain the barrier’s protective functions.

Adhering to these guidelines will ensure that the guardrails continue to offer reliable pedestrian protection throughout their service life.

FAQs

We’ve answered some frequently asked questions about standard pedestrian guardrails.

What is a pedestrian guardrail?

A pedestrian guardrail is a safety barrier designed to protect pedestrians from traffic by directing foot traffic and delineating safe walking areas. Typically constructed from durable, galvanised steel, these guardrails feature vertical bars and robust posts, ensuring high visibility and physical security. They are commonly installed on construction sites, in car parks, and industrial settings to enhance pedestrian safety.

What are the specs for guardrails?

PG1 Pedestrian guardrails are constructed from a 50 x 30mm RHS frame, ensuring exceptional strength and durability. They feature a 12mm diameter infill, with bars spaced at 108mm centres, designed to offer optimal visibility for both pedestrians and drivers. We also provide guardrails with 16 and 20mm infills. Standard pedestrian guardrail side panels measure 2 metres in length and 1.05 metres in height, making them versatile for use in a range of on and off-highway settings. We offer a 1 metre 1 guardrail too. These specifications ensure a balance of safety, visibility, and adaptability across various settings.
